Ever since matte liquid lipsticks became popular, I no longer buy normal lipsticks! Just don’t want to deal with all the mess that comes along – reapplying, transferring, smudging.. life is easier with liquid lippies. Today, I am talking about my all-time favorite, NYX soft matte lip cream.
My best friend introduced me to these NYX lip cream and to this particular Rome shade. I instantly fell in love with it, only to go home to straight away order them online for myself!

Product Name: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Rome & Madrid
Price & Quantity: $6.50 for 8ml
Availability: Available in markets as well as online. You can buy here.
Ingredients: In the picture below.
Shade: I picked 2 of them – Rome & Madrid.
Claims: Simply put, claims to provides a velvety matte finish.
Packaging & Appearance: These liquid lip creams come in a transparent plastic container. They are color-coded, which shows the true color of the shade. Although, some are not so accurate.
It has a black screw on cap, the cap has this velvety feel to it. Precise doe-foot sponge applicator, that makes application on thin lips and corners of the mouth easier.
Smell: It has a mildly sweet, cream-cheese frosting smell to it, not overpowering. You won’t be able to smell, once applied.
Swatch: In the image below.
Shelf Life: Not mentioned anywhere, I have had these for over a year and it is recommended to use within 18 months.
My Experience: The NYX soft matte lip cream goes on soft as butter, velvety-creamy texture with a silky sheen to it. But it settles down into a perfect matte finish.
The cream takes a minute to dry to get the matte-effect. Some shades are more opaque than others, while some take a second coat to look opaque.
The color payoff is phenomenal and the pigmentation is intense. The lip-creams are not drying as some of the matte liquid lipsticks are. These are moisturizing and you don’t feel your lips dry and crack under the lipstick.
These are not long-wear lip-creams, they last for about 3-4 hours without the need of touch up. They tend to rub off from your inner part of the lips after you drink/eat but the rest of it is still there. These stay on very well and once they dry they won’t transfer or crease or budge.
Let’s have a look at both of the shades!
Rome – Medium nude with red undertones. It has a slight pink tint to it making it my favorite MLBB (My Lips But Better) color. I have tried many nudes before but none of them matched my skin tone like this one, just the perfect neutral color.
This is my second bottle, my sister stole the first one from me. This is my go-to shade, works for any look, from day to night, Bold as well as neutral!
I am running out of the second bottle as well. The formula of this one is amazing, just one coat is enough for the color to stand out, very creamy with no lumps.
It is so creamy that when you put it on, you won’t believe that it will dry to give you a matte finish, but it does! It looks the same as it does in the container.
Madrid – It’s the prettiest cranberry red. Although, this looks more of a brick brown-red in the bottle, which I wanted and was a little disappointed when I tried it on.
But the color is beautiful (not what I wanted but yet beautiful)! The formula of this one is slightly sheerer than Rome. Takes two coats to look opaque.
How to use? / Best way to use:
Chapped lips are a no-no and liquid lipsticks tend to highlight the dryness. Scrubbing lips is an important step when you are using lipstick of any kind.
Make this a regime, to scrub your lips once a week & moisturize on a daily basis. If you have dry lips, apply a lip balm and leave it for a good few minutes.
Afterwards, blot your lips with a tissue to remove the excess oil and apply the lip cream. If you have normal lips, then putting on a balm isn’t necessary as the formula of these lip cream is very moisturizing.
• Great Color Payoff
• Intense pigmentation
• Dries matte
• Last 3-4 hours
• Doesn’t smudge
• Doesn’t crease
• Doesn’t transfer
• Smells good
• Precise applicator
• Formula varies some are more opaque than others
• Deceiving packaging
Jhalli Diva Verdict: I will give this 4/5. The formula needs to be more opaque.
Will I Repurchase?
I will definitely keep repurchasing Rome until I find a better nude shade. I have my eyes on Stockholm, London, Abu Dhabi which looks similar to Rome.
Do I Recommend?
Yes, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream is perfect. But not if you are looking for long wear liquid lipstick.
Overall Summary: I have had the shades Copenhagen and Budapest in the past from the same line by NYX, used up to the last bits, such amazing colors. This NYX Matte Lip Cream line has some of the best shades, from pinks to nudes to darker burgundies to corals, some for everybody.
